Does time under tension (TUT) really matter for hypertrophy? See what science says, what the myth is and how to use repetition cadence intelligently.

Time under tension (TUT) is one of the best-selling concepts in “advanced” hypertrophy programs — and one of the most misapplied. The idea that super slow cadences would be superior for mass gain is not supported by current literature. On the other hand, completely disregarding cadence and using repetitions “on the swing” is also a technical error. This article puts TUT in its real place: an important secondary variable, not the spotlight of hypertrophy.

Technical definition of TUT

Direct answer: Time under tension is the total duration in seconds that the muscle remains under load in a set. It is calculated by multiplying the number of repetitions by the total cadence (eccentric + pauses + concentric). The most productive range for hypertrophy is between 30 and 90 seconds per set, with a controlled but natural cadence.

How to read a cadence (3-1-1-0 notation)

Example: bench press with cadence 3-1-1-0 = 3s going down, 1s on the chest, 1s going up, 0s pause at the top.

What science says about TUT and hypertrophy

Systematic reviews on repetition cadence (including work by Schoenfeld and collaborators) converge on a few points:

  1. Cadence between 0.5 and 8 seconds per repetition produces similar gains when the load is adjusted and the set is taken close to failure
  2. Cadence above 10 seconds per rep tends to reduce absolute total volume and does not compensate in hypertrophy
  3. Uncontrolled explosive cadence can increase the load moved, but reduces effective tension on the target muscle
  4. The eccentric phase contributes to hypertrophy in equal or slight advantage over the concentric phase, justifying controlled descent

The myth of the super slow cadence

“Count to 5 going down and 5 going up to grow more” is a recipe repeated in the gym without any basis in evidence. What happens when the cadence becomes 5-0-5:

The result: lower work volume, less absolute tension, equal or lower hypertrophy. The perception of “harder set” comes from metabolic discomfort, not superior hypertrophic stimulus.

The myth of “absolute control” in every exercise

The other extreme: descending a 120 kg squat in 5 seconds transforms a hypertrophic series into an isometric resistance test. On heavy compounds, controlled natural cadence (2 to 3 seconds descent, intentional ascent) is ideal. Excessive control on heavy compound rarely improves results — it only increases the risk due to prolonged fatigue under load.

Common mistakes with timing under tension

Exchange load for time. Reducing 30% of load to double TUT worsens the average hypertrophic stimulus.

Ignore the descent. Performing the eccentric phase in less than 1 second (letting the weight fall) is a waste of stimulus and an increased risk of injury.

Count seconds out loud. Takes focus away from execution. Film the series once and calibrate natural cadence; then follow the pattern without counting.

Use TUT as the main metric. TUT is a consequence of cadence and repetitions, not an objective in itself. Load progression and volume remain the core metrics.

Slow cadence to compensate for poor technique. If you need to slow down to maintain control, the load is too high or the motor pattern is poorly learned.

How to apply it to your routine

  1. Set standard cadence by type of exercise (model in the table above)
  2. Maintain the same cadence for 4 to 6 weeks in each block
  3. When changing blocks, you can test slightly different cadence (e.g. from 2-0-1 to 3-0-1) as a stimulus variation
  4. Film 1 series per month to check that the cadence is actually being executed
  5. Prioritize the quality of each repetition over exact seconds
