“Periodization” has become a shelf term in many programs, often used without the real rigor of the concept. This article discusses periodization as a practical tool: the difference between the main models, when each one shines and how to apply it without overcomplicating it.

What is periodization really?

Direct answer: Periodization is the planned organization of training variables (volume, intensity, frequency, specificity, type of exercise, RIR) over days, weeks and months, with the aim of optimizing adaptation and minimizing accumulated fatigue. It’s not “changing training” randomly; It’s about following a rational plan, allowing you to evaluate what works.

The principle of supercompensation

The body responds to stimulus → temporary fatigue → recovery → level slightly higher than the initial one (supercompensation). Periodization seeks:

  1. Apply appropriate stimulus
  2. Allow recovery
  3. Consolidate adaptation
  4. Apply new stimulus before adaptation disappears

Training without periodization can overlap stimuli without recovery (plateau, overtraining) or wait too long between stimuli (loss of adaptation).

Common errors in periodization
